… Some activists hope the arrival of Extinction Rebellion will be a watershed moment for the US environmental movement, shifting it from what they see as a tepid response to the cavalcade of disasters threatening the livability of the planet. Extinction Rebellion is aimed at spurring a muscular, punkish outpouring of civil disobedience, snarling cities and frogmarching politicians towards meaningful action ….

Climate protests heat up

Could Extinction Rebellion be the next Occupy movement?

By the end of the second day of protests, 290 had been arrested and 55 bus routes had been closed

IN FRONT OF a bright pink sailing boat emblazoned with the words “tell the truth”, an elderly man in red trousers is telling his. He urges the crowd assembled in the centre of Oxford Circus to use their anger about climate change, but not to allow it to put off others. “If we’re abusive to people that’s not helpful,” he warns, before proceeding to invoke Martin Luther King and Gandhi. He then loses his train of thought. “I’ve forgotten where I was. I’ll pause and invite you to do the same and breathe.”

Extinction Rebellion London protest: 290 arrested

4/16/2019 [20:08 CDT]

https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-47945397

Nearly 300 climate change activists have been arrested after roads were blocked in central London, amid protests aimed at shutting the capital.

A second day of disruption took place after Extinction Rebellion campaigners camped overnight at Waterloo Bridge, Parliament Square and Oxford Circus.

Up to 500,000 people were affected by the diversion of 55 bus routes.

The Met said 290 people had been arrested. During protests in Edinburgh, 29 arrests were made.

Organisers said protests had been held in more than 80 cities across 33 countries.

In London, motorists face gridlocked traffic on a number of alternative routes, such as Westminster Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge.

Transport for London warned bus users that routes would remain on diversion or terminate early.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said although he “shared the passion” of the activists, he was “extremely concerned” about plans some had to disrupt the Tube on Wednesday.

“Ongoing demonstrations are causing serious disruption to public transport, local businesses and Londoners who wish to go about their daily business,” Ch Supt Colin Wingrove, of the Met, said. …

The Times view on climate protesters: Green Growth

Their aims may be impractical yet the issues they highlight concern more people than ever

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/the-times-view-on-climate-protesters-green-growth-hfqfpnjhz

The arteries of a great commercial centre are its transport links and London’s were clogged yesterday as climate protesters blocked streets. They thereby imposed a deadweight cost on business and an inconvenience to commuters. This might seem a case of the partisan concerns of the few trumping the public good of the many, except that the protesters make a case that policymakers and the public need to hear and properly debate.

The demonstration was organised by an international group called Extinction Rebellion which hopes that it will “bring London to a standstill for up to two weeks”. The protesters made traffic impassable over Waterloo Bridge by “planting” trees in pots along the road, creating a de facto garden bridge. They also smashed windows at the headquarters of Shell and daubed the building with paint. The damage to property is inexcusable but it had the intent of causing sufficient damage exceeding £6,000 for the perpetrators to be charged with criminal damage and thus secure a jury trial. They clearly hope that they will be acquitted, further winning popular support.

Every demonstration attracts hotheads, and Extinction Rebellion was at pains to stress its peaceful methods in pressing for radical government action to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2025. Whatever commuters may think of the protests, they reflect the views of increasing numbers of young and not-so-young people. …

London’s police launched a major operation on Tuesday to remove hundreds of climate protesters who had occupied a bridge across the river Thames for more than 24 hours after declaring the activists were causing “serious disruption”.

Dozens of people were arrested as Metropolitan Police officers removed people who had joined a demonstration on Waterloo Bridge by Extinction Rebellion, an environmental movement demanding the UK government declare a climate emergency.

However, it took in many instances five officers to remove each protester and there were many more volunteers ready to replace those arrested. An hour after the operation began in the early afternoon, the bridge was still closed to traffic.  …

Jake Johnson, staff writer, 4/15/19

The Extinction Rebellion movement kicked off a week of marches, demonstrations, and peaceful civil disobedience across the U.S. and around the world on Monday to demand “systemic changes to stop global warming while there’s still time left.”

In Scotland, climate campaigners plan to shut down Edinburgh’s North Bridge to get their government’s attention. Similar disruptions are planned in dozens of cities across the U.S. and the United Kingdom.

According to Extinction Rebellion—which several climate activists in the U.K. launched last year—tens of thousands are expected to take to the streets in nearly 40 countries across six continents.
